An Evening of Mellow Motown

The golden era of soul produced some of the greatest songs ever written. At the heart of it all was Motown, a label renowned for discovering and developing extraordinary artists, backed by a team of gifted songwriters who created thousands of songs — many never recorded, but some destined to become timeless classics.

An Evening of Mellow Motown brings four talented musicians together to put their own spin on a selection of classic songs and lesser-known gems from Motown and beyond. And that’s not all… throughout the evening, we’ll be joined by a host of special guest musicians and vocalists, bringing their own soulful style and personality to some of the songs.

The music of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and Donny Hathaway sits alongside more unexpected choices from The Impressions, Gladys Knight, Roberta Flack and other great artists of the era.

Band lineup:

Del Blake - Vocals & Guitar

Del is a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter whose musical roots stretch from gospel and soul through funk, jazz, R&B and contemporary music. Past credits include The Magic of Motown, Gwen Dickie (Rose Royce), The Honeyz, Jodie Abacus, The Lion King at Disneyland Paris, Sweet Soul Music, The Songs of Sister Act (with the London Community Gospel Choir) as well as TV appearances with well known acts such as Adele, Paloma Faith, JLS and on Britains Got Talent. Del has developed a distinctive style that combines soulful vocals with expressive guitar playing. He has recently returned to releasing his own material, while continuing to perform on the touring show How Sweet It Is - Motown's Greatest Hits

Hilary Cameron – Vocals, Piano & Flute

Hilary is a London-based pianist, vocalist and songwriter who studied jazz at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. Her career has included performances at Ronnie Scott’s, the Vortex and other leading venues, as well as work with artists including Womack & Womack, Gail Ann Dorsey and Clare Hirst. Her playing combines jazz sophistication with a soulful and Latin-influenced sensibility.

Roy Merchant – Bass Guitar

Roy is an experienced bass guitarist with a deep appreciation of soul, jazz and groove-based music. His playing provides the foundation for the band, combining a strong sense of groove with the subtlety and space needed for the Mellow Motown arrangements.

Mark Allis – Drums & Flugelhorn

Mark is a drummer and percussionist who studied jazz drums at Trinity College of Music. His career has included extensive live work, including TV & Radio, cruises, big bands and jazz ensembles, as well as studio recording. Mark has played with artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra and Harry Hill, Mel C and Shirley Bassey, Donny Osmond and Alice Cooper. Mark is a director of Sutton Music Centre, where he has developed a busy programme of music education, live events and performance opportunities.

Expect soulful grooves, beautiful melodies and familiar songs heard in a fresh, intimate setting — a mellow take on some of the greatest music ever made.
