Music Movie Night: 'Becoming Led Zeppelin'

That's right, it's time for another Music Movie Night at the SL, and we're really excited about it. 'Becoming Led Zeppelin' is the first and only authorised documentary of the rock legends.

Directed by Bernard MacMahon and released early in 2025 to great acclaim, the film tells the story of how Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham came together in 1968 and plots their rise to global stardom over the course of their first two albums. It features newly-unveiled footage, remastered sound and video and the full approval and participation of Page, Plant and Jones, plus rare audio of Bonham.

The film became the highest-grossing documentary of 2025 in the US, taking $10m at the box office, and the most-streamed music doc of the year. It features such Zep classics as 'Communication Breakdown', 'Whole Lotta Love', 'Ramble On' and 'Dazed & Confused.'

Said MacMahon: "It’s a story about how four boys that come from nowhere with no access can get to a position where they can communicate with the world – through really, really, really hard work.”

Screen International contributing editor Wendy Mitchell told The Guardian: “It’s not just a cookie-cutter VH1 Behind the Music-type thing. It’s trying to tell the story of early Led Zeppelin, how they became what they were. Nobody’s ever really done it quite that way before."
